2009 Chevrolet Camaro SS

The new Camaro appeared at the Detroit Motor Show in January 2007 and was an instant hit, and the big news is that the car is going into production almost unaltered.

The 2009 Chevrolet Camaro SS is based on GM’s Zeta platform, which underpins Australia’s Holden Commodore and the new Pontiac GTO as well as the Pontiac G8. The Zeta platform was designed from the start to be adaptable, and so far it looks as if it’s going to spread through most of GM’s brands.

The Zeta platform is also remarkably stiff, and is the ideal basis for the Camaro. The platform can be altered for wheelbase, so the 2009 Chevrolet Camaro SS is not going to be merely a Holden Commodore with a couple of doors taken off (that would be the new Pontiac GTO).

“The new Camaro will be almost identical to the concept, a thoroughly modern interpretation of the 1969 model, considered by many to be the best design of the car’s first generation,” said Ed Welburn, GM’s global vice president of design, who actually owns a 1969 Camaro SS.

The new car will feature multi link independent rear suspension and there will be choices of manual and automatic gearboxes, as well as V6 and V8 engines. The gearboxes will likely be the same six speed manual and six speed auto found in the Holden Commodore.

The Camaro was deigned by a particularly young group of designers, ranging in age from 27 to 35, but they all grew up with a common passion for American performance cars.

Nearly 4.8 million Camaros have been sold between the car’s introduction in 1967 and 2002, when production of the iconic vehicle ended, and there are more than one thousand Camaro clubs around the world.

The standard V6 model will use the 3.6 liter version of GM’s global V6, tuned to between 240 horsepower and 260 horsepower, while the V8 option will most likely be the 6.2 liter version of the GEN VI with around 400 horsepower. But GM is also currently working on a direct injection version of the V8, gaining more horsepower while increasing fuel economy from between three to six percent, and Dave Sczomak, development engineer-GM Powertrain Advanced Engineering, says the technology will bump power to “well over 450HP.” That engine may well make an appearance in the Camaro, either in the standard car or the SS model.

Either way, the SS version will be stripped out for lightweight performance. Expect the SS to weigh somewhere between 350 to 500 pounds less than the V8 Camaro for a 0-60 time around a tenth of a second or so better than the standard V8.

The all-new 2009 Chevrolet Camaro SS will begin with early production versions right at the end of 2008 and will hit the streets in the first quarter of 2009. But it’s not going to be an entirely US car, as the Camaro will be built at the Oshawa #2 car plant, part of GM’s award-winning, Oshawa assembly plant complex in Canada.

Hybrid Cars Negative Environmental Impact

If you take the total environmental cost of a vehicle as the point from when the car was first designed to when it is dismantled, or hopefully recycled, hybrid vehicles don’t quite match the hype they are currently getting.

A hybrid is a complicated vehicle, requiring lots of new technology and high tech components. A hybrid vehicle is harder to build because of its complexity, which means more energy is used in building the car. Some hybrids can charge their batteries from mains power, and this could be generated by ‘dirty’ technologies such as coal fired power stations or nuclear power. This is especially true for the pure electric cars on the market - it depends on how the electricity is produced as to what end effect your car is having on the environment.

While hybrids are considered clean technology by most people, any hybrid with an internal combustion engine will still produce pollutants. Catalytic converters handle most of the contamination, but there’s still that good old greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide. Even hybrids pump this out, they just pump lower amounts of it, and mostly because most hybrids have engines that stop when the vehicle comes to a halt.

Another thing to consider with hybrids is the battery that stores the electricity. Most hybrids use a nickel metal hydride system, which requires nickel mining, which is often done in open cast mines with all the attendant pollution that goes along with excavating large holes in the ground. Luckily, nickel metal hydride batteries are non toxic and they can be recycled, but at a cost.

A hybrid also requires plenty of copper wire for the electric motors, further increasing the actual cost and environmental effect of constructing the car. Hybrids are also commonly 10 percent heavier than a similarly sized car, which means more power has to be produced than usual to achieve comparable performance. This is why many hybrids these days are actually mild hybrids, with a generator that produces electricity as the vehicle slows down, taking weight off the alternator, allowing it to work less, and therefore save fuel. Not as much as a hybrid, but the system is much simpler and easier to produce.

Once the car is built and on the road, the popular perception is that you are ‘doing your thing for the environment’ and this is true to some extent because a hybrid will use less fossil fuel than a conventional car, regardless of the way you drive it. Remember that a hybrid will probably never match the listed fuel efficiency because of the way the efficiency test is done, and because unless you only ever drive on heavily congested streets you won’t be utilizing the hybrid system effectively. Drive on the highway, for instance, and the petrol engine will be working all the time, negating the effect of the hybrid system.

Above all, remember you are not saving the planet by driving a hybrid or even a fully electric car, you are merely minimising your impact on the environment.

Supercar Trends

High-end, exotic cars with highly superior performances than other average, contemporary cars have been dubbed supercars, although the term is being disputed by the enthusiasts. The first one to receive this name was the Lamborghini Miura.

The criteria that designate supercars are performance, brand, styling, rarity or design. They are not made for single racing. These sports cars are usually driven by track amateurs and, because of their standard equipment, they do not qualify for car races.

By definition a super car has to be extremely fast. The acceleration for virtually all today’s supercars speeds up from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) under 5 seconds – for example Bugatti Veyron. Others reach 160 km/h (100 mph) in less than 9 seconds and it is generally accepted as the standard. Last but not least, a McLaren F1 can reach 320 km/h (200 mph) under 30 seconds.

The top speed was attained by the SSC Ultimate Aero TT, with 256.15 mph (412.233 km/h) in 2007 (13 September) that appointed it the fastest car in the world, similarly acclaimed by the Guinness World Records on October 9, 2007.

The weight is also important: in order to enhance acceleration, they have low vehicle mass and exceptional speed. Some have 5 lb per hp others 11.7 lb per hp. Notable are the Bugatti Veyron with 4.30 lb per hp – despite its heavy weight of 4299 lb including fuel - and the Koenigsegg with 3.23 lb per hp and a weight of 2,601 lb. The record is accepted to be held by the Ultimate Aero TT with only 2.33 lb per hp.

Design and brand are similarly important. Recently, car makers have been building new engines with all-wheel-drive because they perform a lot more power – like in the case of the Lamborghini Murcielago. Usually, the customers are more likely to choose an already established brand. New ones need time to prove their ability and performance.

The preference for a supercar doesn’t necessarily rely on the rarity of the car but on its performance and reliability. Actually more important seems to be the styling, as they have always displayed revolutionary style components.

As far as handling is concerned, supercars are built to offer the maximum in maters of road grip and cornering speeds. The Dodge Viper SRT-10 is known to have excellent brakes, stopping from 100 mph in 274 feet. Brake fade is also important, because, in time, it will diminish in performance.

Online Insurance

Online Insurance

Searching for insurance is very strenuous, tiring and time-consuming. It is a difficult task that it’s otherwise necessary for you and your family’s well being, for your assets and for the general financial comfort. Attention must be high at all time when choosing insurance, whether it is for health, land and water properties or business. Still, there is one aspect that could easily be reduced, and that is time. Online insurance is the solution to this problem.

By visiting the large variety of websites that offer all kinds of insurances, you will be more likely to find the best insurance that best fits your requirements and financial possibilities. In the comfort of your home you can subscribe to companies or brokers or others insurance professionals that will supply you with unlimited offers. Some sites will reply your inquiries with quotes. More quotes will enlarge the range of opportunities. Insurance companies can send you instant answers with comparing prices of insurance rates from a myriad of variants. All you have to do is know exactly what you need and what you can afford. Some types of insurance can be made without ever your leaving the house, creating your policy straight away. Apart from the speed of the response, these services are free when choosing online method.

Frequently, insurance companies offer discounts for existing clients or under certain circumstances. For car insurance, for example, you can receive discount on your premium for being an experienced driver, with a clean driving score or for a clear credit card history. If you choose a company with which you already have a policy you may be eligible to receive fidelity discounts or freebies. Also, if you have proved to be a good client over a longer span of time with the same insurance company, you may, again, receive extra discounts. It all depends on the clauses of that company’s contracts and its regime. The insurance industry is versatile enough to offer you at least one advantageous recommendation. But you need to make all these specification and clearly state your expectations from the insurance policy.

All these sound very promising, but you can never be too careful. Before you decide to go for online insurance, you absolutely need to check the reliability and availability of the websites that claim to offer good insurance. Their authenticity can be verified by a background research of the company’s name: is it renowned, is it reliable when it comes to paying the clients’ claims, how long has it been on the market, what are the exceptions and so on. If you are not sure or find the offers exaggeratedly convenient then check again or look for other companies. These insurances decide your future; they preserve your well being, both physically and financially. They are supposed to offer security not con you into throwing your money out the window. You can call them if you have set your mind on certain insurance but are not quite sure. Eliminate your doubts by contacting them every way possible. Fake companies are all over the Internet but you can avoid them, before you give them your financial information. There are also sites that will authenticate the supposed companies. And it is never too late to contact a friend that can advise and lead you if he has more experience or works in this field.

Car Insurance Tips

Different needs and financial resources will lead you to different types of insurance. You need to concentrate on a reliable insurance, in conformity with your practical requirements, one as low in premium and as high in discounts as possible. Car insurance is compulsory from a legal point of view but you must also consider the life security of you and those who ride along with you in the car.

The car insurance industry is extremely competitive with companies trying to offer the best deal for their customers. There so many possibilities that all you need to do to decide is take a little time and research the online related websites or the local resources.

Car insurance companies are supposed to offer honest and valuable services. Investigate their claims history and be careful with those that refuse to play their client’s claims. You can get free, easy, fast and professional quotes from online brokers or companies. Send your requirements and your questions to as many sites as you can to have as wider a range as possible to choose from. Check the insurance company’s record claims and go for the one that has a clean history in satisfying them. The services that you receive online are very popular and can save you a lot of time and effort. Save their contact information and talk to them about your car insurance expectations, if you are not entirely sure.

After you have finished consulting all that you could get your hands on, compare the possibilities with the realistic, practical needs and choose a company. Remember that they can provide discounts if you are older, with a clear driving score or if you offer to pay deductibles.

Some of the basic car insurance packages include liability, collision and comprehensive coverage. Liability coverage pays for any damages that are caused to others in the accident. It refers to the situations when the accident was caused by you. To be extra careful, it is advisable to get additional coverage which will necessitate a higher premium. In the case of collision coverage the expenses and the premium will differ according to the age of the vehicle, the age of the driver, the people that usually drive the car. If the driver is a teenager then the premium will be the highest, as he or she represent higher risks of accidents. The comprehensive coverage is deductible which means that the insurance company will finance you according to the actual worth of the car at the time of the accident.

Always keep in mind that in such cases as insurance, car insurance to be more specific, being practical and precise is essential. It is a matter f securing your life and that of the ones that come into contact with. The internet will turn out to be the more resourceful and effective way or comparing the best car insurances that best fit your needs.
